The Maine Coon Cat.
Some 150 years ago, American sailors returning to the State of Maine brought home
Angoras which over the years were selectively bred to evolve into one of the largest
feline breeds. The Maine Coon Cat is a beautiful large
cat that comes in many colors and patterns, although it is best known for the
brown tabby variety. With long legs and bodies, and a coat reminiscent of the native
raccoon - "coon", it has a strange habit of grooming its long tail by
spiraling it around a front leg. It is large in size, with a muscular,
broad-chested
body and wide-set legs and large paws. The Maine Coon has a heavy,
shaggy coat with longer hair on the stomach, flanks, and tail. Their
personality is friendly and lovable, and they require little maintenance.
They adapt well to other animals, and enjoy human companionship. The 1993 coin is the sixth of the Cat series, and it has a beautiful Maine Coon Cat on the back and a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. This coin is CuNi (Cupro Nickel) in a Brilliant Uncirculated minting. The contrast in the photo at left was enhanced to show the striking coin detail. |
