Each year from 1994 to 1998, the country of Bosnia & Herzegovina has released an annual coin depicting a different majestic horse to the delight of horse lovers and coin collectors everywhere.  The coins that are made of CuNi (Cupro Nickel) are in a Brilliant Uncirculated minting, which gives them amazingly fine detail on the shiny finish.  The coins that are minted in Sliver, contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, and are of Proof quality.  Proof coins have a "mirror finish" on the background with the details of the coin being raised and frosted in appearance.

The first coin in the series honored the famed Lipizzaner Stallion, and is the most popular of the coins in the series.  The succeeding years depicted the English Hack, Hanoverian, Arab, and Chinese breeds.  Our supplies of these coins are limited to stock on hand.  The coins on this page are currently all in stock.

The 1996 coin is the third of the Horse series, and it has a majestic Hanoverian Horse on the front and the coat of arms for Bosnia & Herzegovina on the back.

Distinguished by its athletic movement, the Hanoverian Horse is an excellent show jumper and dressage performer.  Its even-tempered nature and refined behavior make it a favorite with many horse riders.  The breed's historic home is in today's state of Lower Saxony, in northern Germany, the former Kingdom of Hanover where a flourishing horse-breeding industry has existed for 400 years. The Hanoverian has been bred for centuries to stand up under a variety of demanding conditions and uses.  The Hanoverian has dispersed to all five continents and represents today one of the most prominent breeds of riding horses in the world.

The 1995 coin is the second of the Horse series, and it has a refined English Hack Horse on the front and the coat of arms for Bosnia & Herzegovina on the back.

Best recognized as "Black Beauty", the English Hack is a supremely elegant horse with beautiful light paces and manners to match.  The Hackney is a dynamic, high-stepper with two branches -- the horse and the pony -- both bred specifically for their brilliant performance in harness.  The Hackney horse was developed in Great Britain in the early 18th Century, and it was favored as a carriage horse by English sportsmen and aristocrats.  The Hackney pony was developed from the Hackney horse by crossing with the small, spirited Welsh Ponies.  The Hackney pony is small in stature, under 14.2 hands at the withers (58 inches). It possesses a fine, trim head, small ears with a balanced body, trim legs and feet, short back and well-arched head and tail. The Hackney horse is a bit heavier proportionately and can be 14 to 16 hands tall.

The name "Hackney" comes from the French word Hacquenee derived from the Latin word for horse, equus. The term, brought to England by the Normans in the 11th century, was fully assimilated into the English language by 1303. At that time the term meant a riding horse, as distinguished from the heavier warhorse, and later evolved to the abbreviated "Hack" meaning a riding horse or a hired carriage.

The 1994 coin is the first of the Horse series, and it has a Lipizzaner Stallion on the front and the coat of arms for Bosnia & Herzegovina on the back.

For thousands of years, horsemanship has been a prerequisite skill for any successful military man.  In 1580, Archduke Charles of Austria foresaw the strategic importance of cavalry to future military conquest and purchased a stud farm from the monks of Lipizza, a town in Slovenia, importing nine Spanish stallions and 24 mares from Andalusia, with the express purpose of breeding the Lipizzaner strain which was exported throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the next 300 years.  The new breed was first exhibited in 1667 during the marriage of the Hapsburg Emperor Leopold I to the Spanish Princess Margaret - 80 white Lipazzaners were present.  For some 300 years, the town of Lipice supplied these horses to the Austrian Empire and following the end of World War II, in 1946, two other Lipizzaner studs were set up in Bosnia.  The first was set up in Vucjak (near Banjaluka) to breed pure Lipizzaner horses while the other, which was set up outside of Sarajevo, was to cross-breed Lipizzaner with the more handy Bosnian Horse for mountain use.

Noted for its great beauty, brains, and bravery - not to mention discipline - the white purebred Lipizzaner is now forever associated with the Imperial Spanish Riding School of Vienna, whose exhibition teams continue to dazzle the world with their extraordinary skill and precision.  Originally, the school was formed in the 18th Century to hone the skills of cavalry men, but has gone on to evolve dressage into "Haute Ecole", a style which requires the horsemen to move in intricate formation with their beautiful high-stepping Lipizzaners performing such balletic movements as pirouettes, croupades and ballotades.  Man and horse, moving in perfect unison and harmony, transform the skill of dressage into a high art form.
