Sherlock
Holmes with Pipe |
In the late 1880s, English author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the greatest of all fictional sleuths, Sherlock Holmes. The first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in the Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and was followed by a series of short stories, published through the 1890s, that made Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson, household names. The most famous Holmes stories include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892) and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902).
The popularity of the Holmes tales was such that Doyle's determined attempt to kill off his hero in the short story "The Final Problem" (1893) had to be abandoned. With the explanation that the great detective had disappeared, not died, Doyle later resurrected Holmes and continued his adventures.
Gibraltar issued a series of coins in 1994 celebrating the 100th anniversary for the return of this incomparable detective.
| Sherlock Holmes Smoking Pipe Coin | |
|
This
coin shows Sherlock Holmes in a classic pose smoking his calabash pipe on the back, and an
effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. It is interesting to note
that his trademark curved or calabash pipe was not clearly described in
the stories, but rather is attributed to actor William Gillette, who
wanted a pipe that would not interfere with his famous profile or with
clear articulation.
The coin is made from Cupro-Nickel (CuNi) and is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The contrast in the photo at left was enhanced to show the striking coin detail. Sorry - This Item is Out of Stock |

The Sherlock Holmes Pipe coin is also available in 1/2 ounce of .925 fine Silver in a Proof quality. Proof coins have the coin background polished to a deep mirror finish prior to the coin being "struck". Then, the coin is struck multiple times so that the raised areas have a pleasant frosted appearance. The result is a very beautiful coin. This coin is packaged in an attractive presentation case.
