Gibraltar
- Paddington Bear Coin |
| Gibraltar - Paddington Bear Coin | |
|
In 1998 Gibraltar saluted the 40th
birthday of one of the world's most popular bears with this commemorative coin. It
has been 40 years since Paddington Bear made his debut in a book by Michael Bond entitled,
"A Bear called Paddington." The tales of the lost bear discovered at
London's Paddington Station by the Brown family, wearing his trademark duffle coat and
carrying his battered suitcase, have charmed the whole world ever since. For the
first time, Paddington has a coin struck in his honor. This coin is made from Cupro-Nickel (CuNi) and is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The other side of the coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The contrast in the photo at left was enhanced to show the striking coin detail. We also offer an adorable Holiday Paddington Bear stuffed toy on our "Dolls & Toys" page (see the bottom photo at left), for a great gift idea to complement the Paddington Bear Coin! |

| Gibraltar - Wedding Coin | |
(click to see enlarged detail |
This coin from Gibraltar was
issued to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II. It depicts a
married couple holding hands, with a wedding ring shown on the woman's hand on top.
The wording around the ring says in Latin "Amor Vincit Omnia", meaning "Love
Conquers All". The wedding ring may have originated in ancient Egypt,
where the presentation of money shaped into a ring symbolized that the husband gave his
wealth to his bride. This coin is a great gift idea for a Wedding or Anniversary. The coin is made from Virenium and is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Virenium, although not easily seen from these pictures, is very close to the color of 14 kt. gold. The other side of the coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The contrast in the photo at left was enhanced to show the striking coin detail. |
| Gibraltar - Wizard of Oz Coin | |
|
In 1995, Gibraltar
celebrated the Centenary of the Cinema. One of the coins issued for
this series was this stunning coin celebrating the Wizard of Oz. This coin is made from just under one ounce (28.28 grams) of .925 fine Silver in a Proof quality. Proof coins have the coin background polished to a deep mirror finish prior to the coin being "struck". Then, the coin is struck multiple times so that the raised areas have a pleasant frosted appearance. The result is a very beautiful coin. This coin has an issue limit of 30,000 pieces, and comes with a "Certificate of Authenticity" in an attractive presentation case. |
| Russia - 5 Kopek Coin | |
|
How many coins from the 18th
century do you own? These 5 Kopek coins were minted in the old Russian Empire during
the 1870s and 1880s. These HUGE copper coins measure 41 mm in diameter and are about
4 mm thick (over 1 1/2 inches wide and more than 1/8 inch thick). They weigh in at
about 1.8 oz (an American Silver Dollar weighs 1 ounce, by comparison). On one side of the coin is a scripted monogram with the letters 'E' and 'T' which stands for "Ekaterina Tsarina". On the back side is the classic Russian double-headed eagle. The mint mark at the base of the eagle is EM for Ekaterina Mint. This is the same building where the Tsar's family (including Princess Anastasia) was imprisoned 140 years later, during the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Every coin varies slightly in condition, but the scan at left is a representative sample of the Very Fine coins. The contrast in the photo at left was enhanced to show the coin detail. We've seen these same coins sell in high-priced catalogs, including a fancy gift box, for as much as $45! At Maddy's, you won't get the fancy gift box, but you'll save over $15! |
